Thuringowa, USA — A local husband and professional salesman reportedly employed a well-known sales tactic called the “Assumptive Close” when negotiating relations with his wife on Tuesday night, leaving her in a state of disbelief.
In sales, an assumptive close is a closing technique where the salesperson behaves as though the deal is already agreed upon, even before the customer has explicitly said yes. Instead of asking whether the buyer wants the product or service, the salesperson moves forward as if the decision has already been made, subtly nudging the buyer toward agreement.
For example, rather than asking, “Would you like to sign up today?” a salesperson might say, “Should we schedule your first delivery for Monday or Wednesday?” By framing the choice as one of details rather than a decision, the salesperson assumes consent and reduces friction in the negotiation.
In this instance, the negotiation began when the husband nonchalantly yelled from their marital bed to his wife, who was in the pair’s en-suite: “Bring a towel baby” knowing this would be required if relations were to intensify later in the night. If the wife brought a towel to bed, the husband knew he had sealed the deal.
It didn’t go according to plan, however, when the wife — seemingly bothered by the suggestion — asked him to clarify his intentions. The husband, in response, decided the best course of action, once called out, was to explain the tactic, stating: “Look darling, honestly it’s a sales technique where you assume the deal is done. More often than not, the potential customer – in this case you – goes along willingly. Now that I’ve told you that, you have a choice: bring a towel then get a stretch-out AND a lesson in sales, or don’t bring one and get neither.”
Although a recent Gallup poll showed 96% of wives are immune to this technique, the wife eventually decided to comply — sealing the deal for the local husband. She did, however, demand the agreement be sweetened with a 20-minute discussion about her feelings prior to intimacy.
When asked for comment, the husband simply stated: “Not my first rodeo. I know what I’m doing.”
